Meet our New Teachers & Staff for the 2022-2023 School Year!

Hello! My name is Samantha Redmond, and I have the wonderful opportunity to be Christ Lutheran's 4th Grade teacher this upcoming 2022-2023 school year.

It is such a full circle to get to teach at this school, as I have attended Lutheran schools almost my entire life. I was raised in Hawthorne, CA where I continue to live today. During my elementary and middle school years, I attended Ascension Lutheran Church and School in Torrance, CA, then I attended high school at Pacific Lutheran High School in Gardena, where I had amazing teachers and mentors who poured the love of Jesus into me and helped me appreciate the opportunities a Christian School education provided for me and my peers. With prayer and support from my teachers at Pacific Lutheran and my family, I was accepted and committed to Concordia University Irvine for my undergraduate schooling to study Elementary Education, Church Work, and Music. I graduated in May 2020 with my Bachelors in Liberal Studies from CUI.

I then went on to complete my CA Preliminary Credential requirements from 2020-2022. It was actually during the second block of student teaching last November to January where God led me to Christ Lutheran where I student taught under the mentorship of Dionne Sevy and had the opportunity to grow in relationship with the incredible staff and this wonderful community! It is for this reason and more I am so thrilled to accept the Call to teach at Christ Lutheran Church and School this fall and help students see their true potential to learn and grow in so many ways.

Hi! My name is Brad Royuk, and I’m so happy to be teaching middle school at Christ Lutheran this year.

I come from a family of teachers with roots in Nebraska, but I’ve lived all over the country, teaching in Seattle, Baltimore, and Hawaii. I have been teaching for 27 years, and truly love it. I especially love working with middle schoolers, who I think are the most amazing, weird, and wonderful kind of kids.

I have taught many subjects, but my favorite thing is talking with middle schoolers about Jesus and life and everything. Middle schoolers are just starting to see the world like adults do, with all its subtleties and frustrations and joys. How fun to be one of the people who help them think about it and talk about it.

Besides my school family, I love being involved with my church family – in Bible study, in music, in fellowship. I also like to garden, to hike, to taste new foods, and to travel.

I’m really looking forward to meeting you. God’s blessings, and I’ll see you soon! Brad Royuk

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I started my career in education at Child Development Inc., in Redwood City, California, and while working on my BA at San Francisco State University I spent time as a swimming instructor, pool lifeguard, and swim coach for two different teams. These positions afforded me additional experience working with students in a capacity that allowed for creativity, safety and teamwork. I also gained valuable experience when I assumed the roles of Program Supervisor, Director and Lead Teacher while working for Children’s Creative Learning Center in Northern California.

I completed my student teaching while living in the Bay Area and when I returned to the South Bay in 2016, I took on the role of the School Age Care and Summer Camp Director for Christ Lutheran Church and School. In this position, I was responsible for the planning of curriculum and program development of both before and after-school onsite daycare during the school year, and the summer camp program during summer break.

It is a pleasure to see children grow in the positive and enriching environment here at Christ Lutheran, and I look forward to returning to the classroom and continuing to support the ministry in a new capacity as the 3rd grade teacher starting in September.

I truly enjoy working with children and helping them develop and to see them flourish in their God-given gifts and talents. “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6.

My name is Sarah Turnbull. I grew up all across the United States as an Air Force child and then married a military man who recently transferred to the Space Force. This has resulted in 21 moves in my life! My oldest two children (19, 16) are graduates of Christ Lutheran and my youngest will be entering sixth grade at CLS this year. We enjoy cooking, exploring, visiting museums, crafting, and reading books together.

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood and have taught preschool, third grade, and first grade as well as had prior experience being a Children’s Ministry Director, Art to Grow On docent, children’s editor for small publication, and K-8 substitute teacher. After stepping down from teaching first grade at Christ Lutheran to care for my family during COVID on-line schooling, I am looking forward to stepping back in to the classroom as the CLS art teacher.

I am excited to teach each grade once a week in our very own art room on campus. In addition to introducing the students to the elements of art, the principles of design, different tools and mediums, and a variety of both past and contemporary artists, I desire to help them become more confident in their own abilities, to become more aware and appreciative of the beauty found around them, and to stir in them the desire to create and use their imaginations. CLS strives to nurture each student spiritually, academically, athletically, and musically and developing an art program will provide one more way to reach students and grow their interests and abilities.

I am privileged to join the Christ Lutheran community where learning about and creating art can be one more way of worshipping the Master Artist.

My name is Diana Jenkins and I am very excited to start a new school year at Christ Lutheran! I am looking forward to sharing this journey with you and your student as we embark together on our journey through middle school English and History.

I am a South Bay native and graduated from Redondo Union High School in 2008. I began my college journey at El Camino College and transferred from there to Biola University in La Mirada, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History, with a minor in Biblical Studies. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in History from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Some hobbies I enjoy are sewing, reading, baking, and spending time in the great outdoors whenever I can. God has created this incredible world for us to enjoy and to glorify Him in our enjoyment of His gifts, which is such an amazing blessing!

I am not only looking forward to what this new year holds academically; I am also looking forward to witnessing what the Lord will do to grow the students and staff members as we remain grounded in His Word. Let’s get started! In Christ, Ms. Jenkins

Mrs. Mary Nicholson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from California State University, Long Beach, and her California Teaching Credential from California State University, Dominguez Hills. At age 23 she began her career in education as a 5th grade teacher in the Hawthorne School District.  While working for HSD she also held the positions of Administrative Designee, Special Projects Teacher, and District Performing Arts Specialist. Mrs. Nicholson was the founder of the Washington School’s Performing Arts Group which performed at many LA area special events – including the Junior Achievement Awards. She was honored to receive the Bravo Award in the Hawthorne School District for excellence in incorporating the arts in education, as well as the Teacher of the Year Award.

Mrs. Nicholson and her husband, Scott, received God’s message about Christ Lutheran School after three unrelated people recommended it as a place for their son William’s education. He attended CLS from pre-school through 8th grade and credits his education here as the reason public high school “was a breeze”. In 2011 Mrs. Nicholson left public school to accept the position of Computer Teacher at Christ Lutheran. A year later she moved into the position of 5th grade teacher (with William in her class). She held this position for 10 years, before taking a year off.  For the past year she has worked for her husband, helping him with his Marriage and Family Therapy practice. This year she is going to try to have the best of both worlds by returning to the 5th grade classroom part-time and continuing to work for her husband in the afternoon.

In her free time, Mrs. Nicholson loves reading, acting, dancing, trying to play the flute and ukulele, listening to her son play drums, and spending time with her family. Her favorite Bible verse is: Proverbs 3:5 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”

Mrs. Nicholson will be the Lead Team Teacher for 5th grade in partnership with Team Teacher, Ashleigh Varghese. Mrs. Varghese was recently announced as our new Computer Teacher. Mrs. Varghese will spend mornings in the Computer Lab and afternoons in the 5th grade classroom. We are so excited about this dynamic duo teaming up to teach our 5th graders this year!

My name is Jen Stuler and I am very excited to share my passion for music with Christ Lutheran School as the new elementary Music Teacher.  My love for music began at the age of five years old when I was cast in my first musical theater production.  From there, in addition to musical theater, I studied voice (beginning at age eleven years) and piano (starting at age eight).  Along with many school and choral productions, other musical theater credits include Santa Barbara Youth Theater and Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera. After being accepted into the prestigious summer program for Vocal Arts after high school at the California Institute of the Arts, I attended California State University Northridge where I began as a Voice major.

During that time, I was selected as the only soprano freshman to sing with the prestigious Northridge Singers, a group that toured the world and sang at such venues as the Kodak Theater and the Greek Theater.  In 2003 we had the great pleasure of traveling to Wales where we competed and won the highly competitive Choir of the World competition.  While at CSUN, I also won the title of Miss Cal State Northridge which I credit to my rendition of O Mio Babbino Caro from my favorite opera Gianni Schicci.  After two years at CSUN, I transferred to the University of Southern California where I received a scholarship award for Voice and earned a degree in Music Industry.  Other voice credits include sharing the stage with Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow and Russell Watson.  In addition, I have sung the National Anthem for both Clippers basketball at Staples Center and Galaxy soccer games at the Home Depot Center.  Other performance credits include the Knitting Factory, Room 5, Dodger Stadium for the Cure Autism Now Walk as well as many local charity events and serving on various church worship teams.

My love of teaching began in high school where I first began by helping my friends.  I officially opened my private voice studio 16 years ago.  Since then I have loved helping my students find their own unique voices by teaching them how to discover the subtext within a song, draw it out vocally while simultaneously being grounded in proper vocal technique.  In addition to a musical theater background and classical voice education, I had the great privilege of studying under Valerie Morehouse (her clients include SIA, Sam Smith, Hunter Hayes, Avril Lavigne) while also studying the highly acclaimed Seth Riggs Method of Speech Level Singing.  Throughout my years of teaching, I am very thankful to have taught kids and adults of all ages, everything from basic singing tools to preparing for college admission auditions and performances.  It is truly a great privilege to witness God use music to inspire and ignite.  In the classroom, I was invited by Peninsula Heritage School in Rolling Hills Estates, to work with both their choir as well as their musical theater departments on performance techniques, storytelling, and stage presence.  In addition, I had the joy of volunteering and teaching two quarters of music for a middle school elective at Christ Lutheran last year.

I have been blessed by being married to my best friend and college sweetheart, Justin, for the past fifteen years and we have three beautiful girls.  In my free time, I love to read, cook, write, and take fun adventures! My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, which has become a life verse for our family.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to join the CLS teaching staff and I cannot wait to begin teaching this Fall.
